Nāgārjuna’s Letter to a Friend — Stanza 8: The Six Pāramitās What does it mean to practise the six perfections of Mahāyāna Buddhism, and how do they transform the way we live, think, and relate to others? In the eighth episode of our series on Nāgārjuna’s Letter to a Friend (Suhṛllekha), we explore the Six Pāramitās, the essential practices of the bodhisattva path. These six perfections offer a practical framework for cultivating wisdom, compassion, ethical discipline, and the mental qualities necessary for awakening. Drawing on Nāgārjuna’s teaching, this episode examines each pāramitā in turn: 1. Dāna Pāramitā — The Perfection of Giving Explore generosity as a practice that loosens attachment, challenges self-centredness, and develops a more open relationship with the world. 2. Śīla Pāramitā — The Perfection of Ethical Discipline Discover how ethical conduct provides the foundation for spiritual development and shapes the way our actions affect others. 3. Kṣānti Pāramitā — The Perfection of Patience Learn how patience enables us to meet difficulty, frustration, and suffering without being governed by anger or reactivity. 4. Vīrya Pāramitā — The Perfection of Diligence Consider the sustained effort required to cultivate wholesome qualities, overcome destructive habits, and remain committed to the path. 5. Dhyāna Pāramitā — The Perfection of Meditative Concentration Examine the development of stable attention and mental clarity through meditation and contemplative practice. 6. Prajñā Pāramitā — The Perfection of Wisdom Explore the wisdom that understands the nature of reality and provides the essential direction for the bodhisattva’s practice. We also consider the meaning of the pāramitās as perfections that carry us beyond ordinary patterns of self-interest, and how these six practices work together rather than functioning as isolated virtues. The bodhisattva path requires more than intellectual understanding. Generosity, ethical discipline, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom must be cultivated through repeated application in everyday life. Their significance lies in how they gradually transform our intentions, conduct, and understanding. The episode concludes with a guided meditation to help you reflect on the six pāramitās and consider how they can be brought into your own practice. Whether you are new to Mahāyāna Buddhism or have studied the Dharma for many years, this teaching offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the bodhisattva path.
