John George took a scope from home into Guadalcanal's jungle.
His own memoir tells a different story from the tree-sniper legend.
He was a first lieutenant. His Winchester Model 70 stayed off the island. He used a scoped Army Springfield. We follow his account in Shots Fired in Anger.
