Organised by Anandapur Gujob Theatre Group, the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Lecture is a lecture series dedicated to exploring theatre, its ideas, practices, histories, and its relationship with society and politics. Inspired by the legacy of Safdar Hashmi, the legendary Indian theatre activist and playwright, this initiative seeks to create a space for critical thought, meaningful dialogue, and intellectual exchange on theatre and its many dimensions. The series will bring together some of the most distinguished and thought-provoking voices in Bengali theatre, including renowned playwrights, writers, researchers, scholars, and critics, to discuss the questions, debates, and ideas that shape contemporary theatre. In this inaugural lecture, Biplab Bandyopadhyay speaks on the subject “Why I Do Political Theatre” — reflecting on the motivations, beliefs, and artistic commitments behind the practice of political theatre. Why does one choose political theatre? What makes theatre political? How can the stage engage with power, ideology, society, and the struggles of ordinary people? This lecture invites us to reflect on these questions and examine theatre as a space for artistic expression, political engagement, and resistance. Join us in this ongoing conversation about theatre, ideas, and the world we inhabit.
