In 2025, Puma reportedly offered Virat Kohli around ₹300 crore to stay on as their brand ambassador for another eight years. That is roughly ₹37 crore a year, guaranteed, whether the shoes sold or not. He said no. Then he put about ₹40 crore of his own money into a startup almost nobody had heard of, founded by the man who until recently ran Puma India. A few months ago Kareena Kapoor Khan did something smaller but just as telling. After years as the face of a footwear brand called Fizzy Goblet, she stopped being only the face of it and became an investor. Different people, different industries, same move. Walking away from a guaranteed cheque and asking for a piece of the company instead. In this video I break down why. Why a fee has a ceiling and ownership does not. How the equity percentage actually gets decided, and why Gaurav Taneja holds around 40% of his supplement brand while Nikhil Kamath holds 5% of D’YAVOL. What a brand is really buying when it hands over cap table instead of writing a cheque, which is not what most founders think it is. And the part nobody puts in a contract, which is the difference between how a paid ambassador behaves and how an owner behaves. I also cover the version of this that did not work, because 82°E raised well, launched in over 30 countries, and still ended up in acquisition talks. Equity is not automatically better than a fee. It is a different risk. And by the end there is one deal that tells you this stopped being a celebrity story a while ago. An Indian cricketer who bought equity in a YouTuber’s company, at a real valuation. I run a creative production and influencer marketing agency in Mumbai. Negotiating deals between brands and the people who represent them is what my team does every week. So this one is not a press release summary. It is what these deals look like from inside the room.
