Welcome to the next step of BSA Troop 628’s unforgettable 12-day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch! Today, the reality of the backcountry truly set in as our crews officially launched from base camp and hit the trail.
We kicked off the morning with an incredible tour of the historic Villa Philmonte, the stunning home where Philmont land donor Waite Phillips would stay. After soaking in the history, drawing our final trail gear, and loading thousands of calories worth of backcountry food into our packs, it was time to leave base camp behind.
We officially started our first day on the trail, leaving base camp at an elevation of 6,500–6,700 feet and trekking up to Herradura at an elevation of around 7,500 feet. Once we arrived at our campsite, the scouts immediately put their wilderness skills to the test—learning how to properly set up a rain fly and organize and hang their bear bags to keep the crew safe.
The adventure is officially underway, and the excitement for the rugged trails ahead is through the roof!
