The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is one of the bridges connecting Honshu and Shikoku, spanning the Kurushima Strait near Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture and Oshima Island. The bridge consists of three suspension bridges in succession: the First and Second Kurushima Kaikyo Bridges connect Oshima and Umashima, while the Third Bridge connects Umashima with Imabari. This “three-bridge suspension bridge” configuration was the first of its kind in the world. The combined length of the three bridges is approximately 4,105 meters. The bridges form part of the Onomichi–Imabari Route of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway, commonly known as the “Setouchi Shimanami Kaido,” which connects Honshu and Shikoku. Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area is a scenic area designed around the extraordinary combination of the Setouchi Sea, its islands, and the bridges. From the observation terrace on the second floor, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Kurushima Strait and the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, as well as the many large and small islands scattered across the beautiful Setouchi Inland Sea.
