A quiet early-morning walk through Nishi-Shinjuku 4-chome, Tokyo — a neighborhood that was once one of Edo and Meiji-era Tokyo's most celebrated pleasure districts, now hidden in the shadow of the city's skyscrapers. This area, known as Juniso, was once home to two large ponds, dug in 1606 as irrigation reservoirs. By the 1700s, teahouses had sprung up along the water's edge, and the area became a famous scenic spot — even visited by the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, on a hawking excursion, and painted by Hiroshige himself. By the Meiji era, it had grown into a full-fledged hanamachi, a flower district, with around 100 restaurants and teahouses and roughly 300 geisha at its peak. Visitors came for boating, fireworks, and fishing on the ponds — a lively waterside world that lasted until the ponds were finally filled in during the 1960s. Today, only quiet backstreets and gentle slopes remain where the water once was, tucked beside Juniso Kumano Shrine, the guardian shrine of all Shinjuku. No talking. No music. Just ambient city sounds — footsteps, birds, and the quiet hum of Tokyo waking up. 📍 Timestamps: 0:00 Opening 0:28 Nishi-Shinjuku 4-chome (former Juniso flower district) 17:38 Juniso Kumano Shrine 🎥 Filmed with: GoPro Mission 1 Pro Fluid Pro AI (gimbal) Media Mod 2.0 ND Filter Part of the "Silent Walks" series — no-narration, no-music walking tours through Tokyo, filmed early morning to capture the city before it wakes up.
