President William Ruto says Kenya remains open to foreign investors and workers who comply with the country’s laws, while warning that no citizen has the right to attack foreigners or destroy their businesses.
In Part 7 of our Kenya–Burundi coverage, Rwanda Updates examines Ruto’s remarks following concerns among Burundians and other foreign nationals about employment permits, small businesses and their future in Kenya.
Ruto addresses Kenya’s commitment to regional economic cooperation through the East African Community, COMESA and the African Continental Free Trade Area. He stresses that welcoming foreign investment must go hand in hand with compliance with employment, investment and immigration requirements.
What does his statement mean for Burundians living in Kenya? Does it change earlier measures, or clarify how they should be enforced? This report explains what Ruto said—and why his remarks should not be interpreted as automatically removing work permit requirements or cancelling all previously announced measures.
Investment figures and proposed projects mentioned in the video are attributed to President Ruto and presented as his statements, not as independently verified completed investments.
