Something I've been eager to do: A playthrough of Star Fox 64! Or if you live in the UK like me, Lylat Wars. Its okay, you can call it that if you want, I don't mind.
Right in time for the announcement of the new remake coming out that's got everyone either excited or pissed off. So its relevant! This is also part of a little project I'm doing where I play 4 different versions of SF64, maybe 5 if I can get 3DS Star Fox going (sssh).
I'm starting this off with the N64 original, played via the relatively new Gopher64 emulator by loganmc10, the same person who did the Simple64 emulator. So far I like what I played with. There's some weird graphical oddities but gameplaywise its a smooth ride from start to finish for SF64. For anyone who still thinks N64 emulation is an alien black box we will never suss out, hope this emulator makes you look like a fool.
Anyway I take an odd route in this playthrough, one I call the "Star Wolf Twice" playthrough since I go to Fortuna/Fichina even after taking the alternate routes in Corneria and Meteo. That way I face team Star Wolf on Fortuna/Fichina, defeat them, go through Solar, beat the Scottish Planet with the switch method and Area 6 so I can rematch Star Wolf on Venom 2.
I do this so Star Wolf suddenly getting new Wolfens and makeovers like plasters and Geordi Visors on Venom 2 makes more sense than on a purely red route where they just sorta come out of nowhere. It also helps Leon's "Let's see how you handle our new ships" feel less like a non-sequitur. Maybe if they kept in the possible Star Wolf showdown on Katina it'd be less weird.
Also, I managed to medal Corneria. I didn't really intend to medal every other stage but when I got medals on Solar I just said "fuck it" and went out of my way to medal the whole playthrough. And without dying or losing a wing even once! Impressed? There were bits I thought Peppy and/or Falco were gonna go down but it all worked out.
ANYWAY NOTES:
*Corneria takes some work to get the 150 points needed for the medal. Use charged shots well, try to shoot the skiing robots on the ocean bit and aim for the alt route with the Attack Carrier boss since you get a good few more enemies for points on that route. Even then, before you enter the waterfall, throw a smart bomb to the left hand route for an extra point or two.
*Meteo's hidden warp zone is pretty good for racking up points. Do as Peppy says ans use bombs wisely. Also shoot as many of the brown asteroids as you can on the level start.
*Fortuna's pretty simple enough. Get at least 18 kills before Star Wolf first show up and make sure you got the Hyper laser to make them go down faster.
*There's a trick to Solar where you can somehow get a point out of nowhere if you fire a charged shot below the lava arches that frequently shoot out. Try that, just don't fly too low. I mean ffs STAR FOX ARE JUST CASUALLY FLYING INTO THE FUCKING SUN
*For the Scottish Planet, try mashing fire as much as you can to take down portions of the Forever Train. It is possible to get the medal and still hit the switches to go to Area 6, just try wiping out the train. But remember the Landmaster's smart bombs go in a gravity-affected arc compared to the Arwing's. Also if Falco's still around he'll help hit a switch for you. Mechbeth got me at one point but I still hit the final switch so HA
*Area 6 is the best stage, hands down, but you probably will still brake a lot to destroy those disc blasters. Also you can destroy the capital ships by shooting at their bridge (the slightly smaller gunships you can shoot wherever.) At two points when you hit C-Right, ROB will cover you in Great Fox but his shots don't count towards your point total so ignore those. The second prompt tho is a bonus surprise call from Andross.
*Finally on Venom 2, just make sure your wingmates are still around and take out Star Wolf 2 before they force your wingmen into retreat. Hyper lasers kick ass here if you stayed alive up til now. you'll hit the medal threshold before you even get to Andross, its great.
BTW, still don't have a Switch 2, still not interested in getting one, Star Fox 64 Again sure isn't grabbing me myself. Maybe when it goes down massively in price.
finally stop picking on slippy i mean solid snake says he's cool
