Can You Handle One of PA’s HARDEST Hikes? Castanea Boulder Field Loop

Welcome back to The Keystone Hiker! 🌲🥾 In today’s adventure, we’re taking on the Castanea Boulder Field Loop in Bald Eagle State Forest near Castanea, just outside Lock Haven. This is one of the more challenging hikes in Pennsylvania, featuring steep climbs, rugged terrain, and some of the most rewarding views you’ll find in the state. This trail is not for beginners. Expect to gain over 2,000 feet of elevation, navigate uneven and unstable boulder fields, and possibly hike through water depending on the season. Once you reach the boulder field, the trail becomes difficult to follow—so having a navigation app like AllTrails is highly recommended. ⚠️ Important Tips: Not recommended for children under 12 or pets Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip Be prepared for water crossings and slippery rocks Download the trail map ahead of time for offline use Despite the difficulty, this hike is absolutely worth it. The views are some of the best Pennsylvania has to offer, and the challenge makes it even more rewarding.
