Stuck in Survival Mode? Replace Hypervigilance with a New Rhythm in Chronic Illness

Living with chronic illness often puts us in a hypervigilance loop—survival mode. We learn to track symptoms, reactions, medications, appointments, and triggers daily, maybe hourly. At first, that awareness helps us stay safe. But over time, being constantly focused on the details can make it difficult to step back and see the bigger picture. When we're stuck in survival mode, we can lose confidence in ourselves. We second-guess our decisions. We stop trusting our bodies. We become so focused on the next symptom or challenge that it's hard to imagine a future beyond today. In this therapeutic arts practice, I'm using roller stamping to help us create that distance and that space. Through rhythm, repetition, and pattern-making, we'll practice creating enough distance to see a bigger picture instead of focusing on every detail. Along the way, we'll reflect on trust, self-confidence, decision-making, and the challenge of finding our new rhythm after chronic illness. Whether you're navigating MCAS, sarcoidosis, POTS, Lyme or another chronic illness, or simply feeling trapped in an overthinking cycle, I hope this creative practice offers a moment to breathe, step back, and see the forest instead of just a tree branch.
