This exercise will help the novice rider maintain a nice rhythm to a jump. It’s especially useful if you tend to fiddle in front of the fence, which a lot of novice riders do. Some parts of the exercise will set you up for a good take-off spot, while other parts are there for you to practise finding it for yourself. And because young horses can be tricky to get consistently good take-off spots on, this exercise will benefit you there as well. You’ll also introduce your horse to a bounce. Bounces are excellent for improving a young horse’s balance, agility, and strength. The cavaletti warm-up at the start is equally important, helping the rider with accuracy and the young horse with adjustability.
