Finding a 500-Year-Old Hidden Shrine in Rural Japan | POV Ride

A summer ride in Tamba-Sasayama on a Honda CT125 Hunter Cub — sold as the Trail 125 in North America. A small single, ridden slowly. Out of a convenience store car park and straight into the rice fields. Eleven kilometres of them, under an empty sky. The rice is already turning — in a month someone will cut all of it. A small sign, and then a smaller road. The ride ends at Futamura Shrine, standing at the end of a farm road in a valley of rice. A shrine that one village took by force, five hundred years ago, and carried home. No talking — just the engine and the road. ――― ROUTE Dekansho Kaido デカンショ街道 (National Route 372) The road running east out of Tamba-Sasayama, named after the Dekansho-bushi, a folk song of this town. The song, and the summer festival built around it, are recognised as part of Japan Heritage. Mananjo 真南条 A valley south of the old town. Rice on both sides of the road, and almost nothing else. Futamura Shrine 二村神社 (Mananjo-naka, Tamba-Sasayama) In 1482, several villages shared one shrine and quarrelled over the seating at its festival. One village settled it by force, seized a deity statue and carried it home.
