Geologists Just Found Out What Jordan’s Sodom Site Actually Is A paper claiming a space rock exploded over a Bronze Age city near the Dead Sea went viral in 2021, and in April 2025 the journal that published it formally retracted the whole thing. In this one I go through Tall el Hammam, the bubbled mud bricks and pottery melted into glass, the five ruins on the southern shore that got matched to the five cities of Genesis, and the salt pillar called Lot's Wife that a geologist proved was the last wall of a collapsed cave. The part that gets me is the sulfur in those cliffs, actual brimstone, which burns blue and purple if you hold a flame to it. I will be honest, I think the retraction was right, because the melted glass matches what kilns and a burning city leave behind and nobody has ever confirmed a crater there. What I cannot let go of is that the city really did burn and then sat empty for centuries, and the ground has never given up who started it.
