Why the WIG Base Matters More Than the Hair

We photographed three hair systems after normal wear. All three were supplied to people living with medical hair loss. The first is an industrial silicone-coated base, yellowed and cracking along every seam. The second is a polyurethane thin-skin system, brittle and crazed across the whole dome. The third is a lace and mono-top cap buried under dried adhesive and product residue. Different materials, same result. In this piece we work through what each one is doing to the skin underneath. A sealed base traps heat and moisture. Cracked polymer edges become friction points. Set-in residue holds bacteria against a barrier that is already compromised, and no amount of rinsing reaches it. Then we explain why that matters more for these clients than for anyone else. Chemotherapy suppresses the white cell counts that fight infection, and about half of patients receiving it develop neutropenia at some point. During those weeks an intact skin barrier is not a comfort question. It is a defense the body cannot spare. From there we lay out the material standard a medically fragile scalp requires. Four things. It has to breathe. It has to be biocompatible. It has to minimize or eliminate adhesive load. And it has to be genuinely cleanable rather than rinsed around residue that never leaves.
