South Africa load shedding explained: how Eskom ran the most advanced power grid in Africa, pushed out the engineers who built it, and ended up in daily blackouts while a long list of middlemen collected on the dark.
This is the money story behind the lights going out. Eskom once sold cheap, reliable power to its neighbors and ran on a core of about 4,200 professional engineers. Then employment equity and cadre deployment reshaped who ran the power stations, nearly half the registered engineers left in a decade, maintenance collapsed, and the vacuum filled with coal middlemen, labor brokers, a runaway diesel bill, a 20-year floating power-ship deal, and the Gupta procurement the Zondo Commission later exposed. By 2023 the country was losing 24,638 gigawatt hours a year to blackouts. The recovery only began when the state quietly begged the same engineers back. Who was overthrown, and who collected.
