Birthday dive on the wreck of the SS Yongala, Qld, Australia | DiveLog AU | 14th & 15th August 2026

Two days and four dives exploring the legendary SS Yongala, one of Australia’s most spectacular wreck dives and an extraordinary concentration of marine life on the Great Barrier Reef. Lying on its starboard side between approximately 14 and 28 metres, the Yongala has spent more than a century underwater and is now completely covered in coral and surrounded by huge numbers of fish, rays, sharks, turtles and other marine life. There was simply too much to remember, but encounters across the dives included: Sea Snakes Huge Marble Rays Bull Shark Batfish Maori / Napoleon Wrasse Queensland Groper Potato Cod Cobia Lionfish Groupers Giant Trevally Schooling Barracuda Large schools of reef and pelagic fish …and countless other species surrounding the wreck. One of the most memorable parts of these dives wasn’t something we could see. Humpback whale calls could be heard underwater throughout the dives, providing an incredible soundtrack to exploring the wreck.
