We walked along Istiklal Avenue in the late afternoon, on the day before Republic Day. With the holiday break beginning, both locals and visitors from abroad were out enjoying the city and making the most of their day off. The avenue was exceptionally crowded and full of life, with people filling the street in both directions. Today, Istiklal Avenue is one of Istanbul’s best-known pedestrian streets. It is lined with shops, cafés, restaurants, historic passages, cultural venues and beautiful old buildings. Stretching from Taksim Square to Tünel, it welcomes locals and visitors throughout the day. The nostalgic red tram running along the avenue has become one of its most familiar sights. The story of Istiklal Avenue reaches back to a very different Istanbul. During the Ottoman period, it was known as the Grande Rue de Péra. In the 19th century, the area grew into an important centre of social and cultural life, with embassies, homes, shops and gathering places. Theatres, bookshops, cafés, hotels and historic passages opened along the avenue, reflecting the many communities and influences that shaped Pera. Over the years, the avenue continued to change. New shops, cinemas and businesses appeared beside its historic buildings and apartment blocks. After the founding of the Republic, it took the name Istiklal Avenue and remained an important part of Istanbul’s commercial and social life. Today, its historic character and modern city life come together along the same lively street.
