Most people know one name:
Great Zimbabwe.
But Great Zimbabwe was not the only major stone-built center in southern Africa.
It was part of a much larger regional history.
Before its political peak, Mapungubwe had already developed into a powerful state near the modern borders of South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana.
After Great Zimbabwe declined, Khami rose as a major political center with stone-faced platforms and elaborate decorative walls.
Elsewhere, Mutapa, Naletale, Danangombe, Zinjanja, and many smaller centers became part of a changing political landscape tied together by trade, migration, rivalry, architecture, and long-term regional traditions.
These societies were connected to Indian Ocean trade.
Gold and ivory moved outward.
Glass beads, imported ceramics, porcelain, and other goods moved inland.
But trade alone does not explain these states.
Power also depended on farming, herding, craft production, ritual, political relationships, control of resources, and the ability to make authority visible through architecture.
This video also addresses one of the most damaging myths in the history of Great Zimbabwe:
the old colonial claim that Africans could not have built the site themselves.
Archaeology has firmly overturned that fiction.
Great Zimbabwe was built by African communities ancestral to Shona-speaking peoples and grew from local regional traditions.
In this episode, we follow the longer sequence from Mapungubwe to Great Zimbabwe, Khami, Mutapa, Naletale, Danangombe, and other stone-walled centers.
The result is a very different picture.
Not one mysterious lost city.
A connected political world stretching across centuries.
Watch closely and see if you can spot the hidden tiny gold rhinoceros.
