CHANT / II / ANTI-PHONES The second section of CHANT is built around call and response. Kari Francis and I co-composed this section by exploring combinations of mostly percussive consonants and vowels, building a ritualistic soundscape. The electronics also bring together the old and the new, as if we are reaching back toward rituals while trying to find new ways of exploring them. The floor, too, becomes part of that exchange. Through audio-reactive projection design, it responds to the singers’ calls, turning the space itself into another voice in the conversation. I wanted the title to hold a little of that history of antiphonal singing, but also to feel slightly displaced and contemporary: ANTI-PHONE.
