CHANT / IV / PROTESTS
CHANT exists in a speculative future, in a society that has become disconnected and begins reaching backward toward ritual, sound, and collective presence as a way of finding one another again.
IV / PROTESTS is the fourth section of CHANT. Here, chanting shifts from ritual toward action.
This section explores the chant as a collective voice: something that can gather people, carry urgency, demand attention, and transform individual voices into something larger than themselves. The sound world is built from a collage of transformed recordings from actual protests and speeches, interwoven with the live sound of whistles played by the dancers. Voices, noise, breath, and signal begin to blur together, creating a space that feels at once familiar and displaced.
One of the things I love most about this section is the floor itself. Through projection, it stops feeling like a passive surface and becomes almost a moving character of its own. That visual world comes together with the powerful choreography of Andy and Dionne Noble and Bryan Ealey’s lighting, creating a section that, for me, feels restless, collective, and alive.
