September Garden Maintenance | Easy Jobs to Keep the Garden Going

September in the garden is a negotiation. 🍂 The basics might be enough, but a few extra minutes here and there can keep the garden looking beautiful and, more importantly, keep me enjoying it. In this week's Lakewinds Garden, I'm tackling my September garden maintenance list: cutting back marigolds, watering new plants, mowing, tying up flopping goldenrod, transplanting alyssum, cleaning up powdery mildew, weeding the vegetable and cut flower gardens, and trying a copper disk in the birdbath to see if it helps with that persistent green growth. None of these is a huge fall garden project. Most take only 8–10 minutes, but together they make a surprising difference. And that's really the point. By September, I'm a little tired of gardening—but here in Zone 5b, I also know how quickly the season ends.
