There were many reasonable places to hide from a full moon. Under an old witch's bed was probably not one of them.
Mabel discovered this when she reached for her winter blankets and found two enormous yellow eyes staring back from the darkness. She lowered herself carefully and discovered a gigantic brown werewolf attempting to fit beneath a bed built for one elderly witch and several quilts. “Are you afraid of the moon?” she asked. The creature growled, hesitated, and finally muttered, “…Yes.”
His name was Rowan. He had been born a werewolf, and the stories people told about his kind were not entirely accurate. He did not become cruel beneath the full moon, nor did he forget who he was. He simply became enormous — large enough to break chairs by sitting on them, strong enough to tear doors from their hinges accidentally, and frightening enough that people rarely waited to discover whether he intended to hurt them.
So every full moon, Rowan hid. Mabel listened to his explanation with remarkable patience before pointing beneath the bed. “You're crushing my winter blankets.” That was how their arrangement began.
The following month, Rowan returned. Mabel moved the blankets first. The month after that, she cleared the fragile furniture from one room and prepared enough food for something roughly the size of a horse. Eventually, with considerable effort and several complaints about her back, she helped build a shelter beside the cottage where Rowan could spend full moons without destroying anything.
For a while, it worked. Then Embervale noticed the footprints. Something enormous was wandering through the forest. A fence had been broken, chickens had disappeared, and someone claimed to have heard growling near the river. Soon the village was discussing the monster living beyond the lanterns.
Rowan heard the rumors and decided to leave before anyone discovered the truth. But on the evening of the next full moon, bells began ringing across Embervale. A child was missing. Search parties entered the forest carrying lanterns and calling her name while Rowan remained hidden among the trees as the moon rose and his body changed.
He could have stayed there. Instead, he followed the bells.
Hours later, the villagers saw something enormous emerge from the darkness. Lanterns rose and hands reached for weapons as a werewolf stepped between the trees. Then someone noticed what he was carrying. Curled safely between Rowan's enormous arms was the missing girl, whom he had found cold and frightened beside the river.
Rowan gently placed her on the ground and stepped backward. He knew what came next. People always ran from monsters, and he had learned long ago to leave before fear became something worse. He had almost reached the trees when a small voice called after him.
“Wait!”
The girl stumbled across the clearing, wrapped both arms around one enormous furry leg and refused to let go. “You forgot your hug.” For perhaps the first time in Embervale's history, an entire search party found itself uncertain about the proper response to a terrifying werewolf.
The following month, Rowan prepared to spend another full moon quietly beside Mabel's cottage. Then someone knocked on the door. The baker stood outside with a basket of bread. Shortly afterward came the blacksmith carrying a reinforced chair, followed by two children with a blanket they believed a werewolf might like. More villagers appeared as evening settled over the forest.
Rowan looked helplessly at Mabel. The old witch merely smiled. “It appears you've been discovered.”
That night, Rowan sat outside the cottage surrounded by lanterns, food and people who no longer seemed particularly interested in running away from him. Above the trees, the full moon slowly rose over Embervale. For the first time in many years, Rowan looked directly at it without searching for somewhere to hide.
