There was a small apothecary on one of the oldest streets in Embervale called The Crooked Mortar. Its shelves were crowded with dusty bottles, dried herbs hung from the ceiling, and the wooden sign outside had been crooked for longer than anyone could remember. Yet what made the shop unusual was much simpler: it never closed. Its owner, Elias Veyr, was a thin, silver-haired man with old-fashioned clothes and seemingly endless patience. Whether someone arrived at sunrise, during a thunderstorm or at three in the morning, Elias would always be behind the counter. “Do you ever sleep?” customers sometimes asked. “When there are no customers,” he replied. Nobody had ever seen him sleeping. Elias sold remedies for almost everything: fever herbs, salves for dragon burns, antidotes for enchanted mushrooms and a popular tonic for people foolish enough to challenge dwarves to drinking contests. But one thing was never for sale: a small bottle of dark red liquid kept on the highest shelf. Then people began disappearing around Embervale. One rainy night, a young healer named Mara brought a wounded traveler into the shop. Two deep punctures marked his neck. Elias took one look at them, locked the door and turned the sign to CLOSED. Mara found that considerably more alarming than the bleeding man on the counter. Elias took down the red bottle and used a few drops to prepare a remedy. The traveler quickly began to recover. Then Elias finally revealed what the bottle contained. His blood. Elias Veyr was a vampire. He had lived in Embervale for one hundred and forty-seven years without hunting anyone. Long ago, he had discovered combinations of herbs, minerals and magic that allowed him to survive without taking human blood. Later, he learned that properly prepared vampire blood could produce extraordinarily powerful medicines. A creature that had once survived by taking lives had spent more than a century learning how to save them. But the wounds on the traveler’s neck were not Elias’s doing. There was another vampire in Embervale. The following night, their patient disappeared. Elias and Mara followed his bloody footprints to an abandoned estate in the forest, where they found the missing villagers alive but weak. Their captor was Corvin, a younger vampire who intended to make Embervale his new home. He found Elias’s existence ridiculous. An ancient vampire spending eternity measuring herbs and selling remedies for back pain seemed like a spectacular waste of immortality. Then Corvin asked the question Elias feared most. “How long do you think they would let your little shop remain open if they knew what you were?” The fight that followed destroyed most of the estate. Mara freed the prisoners while Elias faced Corvin, but the older vampire did not win because he was stronger. He won because he was an apothecary. Corvin discovered this when what he believed was blood splashed across his hand and began to burn. Silver dissolved in black vervain. “Cheater,” Corvin hissed. Elias straightened his torn coat. “Apothecary.” When they returned to Embervale, the truth had already spread. Dozens of townspeople were waiting outside The Crooked Mortar, and Elias wondered whether his century in the town had finally come to an end. Then an elderly woman raised an empty jar and complained that her ointment had run out. Someone else needed more tonic for his back. Another asked whether being a vampire meant Elias could continue keeping the shop open all night. Elias stared at them for a moment. Then he unlocked the door. The red bottle remained on its shelf, but now it had a label: EMERGENCIES ONLY. Underneath, Mara added: ABSOLUTELY NOT FOR HANGOVERS. A few days later, Elias added a third.
