Galileo Galilei changed the way humanity looked at the universe. Born in Pisa in 1564, Galileo began his journey studying medicine before mathematics and science captured his imagination. Despite financial struggles, family responsibilities, and academic opposition, he developed into one of history’s most influential scientific thinkers. In 1609, Galileo transformed the telescope and turned it toward the night sky. What he discovered was extraordinary. He observed mountains and valleys on the Moon, countless stars in the Milky Way, sunspots, the phases of Venus, and four moons orbiting Jupiter. These discoveries challenged long-established ideas about Earth and the structure of the universe. His support for the Copernican model eventually brought him into conflict with Catholic Church authorities. In 1633, Galileo was tried by the Roman Inquisition and forced to formally recant his position. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest, while continuing his scientific work despite declining eyesight. Galileo died in 1642, but his discoveries continued influencing astronomy, physics, and the Scientific Revolution.
