On 27 March 1977, two Boeing 747s collided on a fog-covered runway on the island of Tenerife. In all, 583 people lost their lives. It is still the deadliest plane crash in history, and it happened on the ground.
Fog, a crowded airport and an unclear radio call all played a part. But at the heart of the story is something smaller: a question. In the KLM cockpit, the flight engineer asked it twice. The takeoff did not stop.
🧠 Why do people stay silent when something feels wrong? This video explores the psychology behind the disaster: authority in a steep cockpit hierarchy, expectation that turned an "OK" into a clearance, and stress that narrowed attention into tunnel vision. It also looks at why many passengers froze when they had only seconds to escape, and how Tenerife helped change aviation through the training now known as Crew Resource Management, an idea hospitals now teach to surgical teams.
🕯️ In memory of the 583 people who lost their lives on 27 March 1977.
The cockpit and radio moments are dramatizations based on the official transcripts, performed with synthetic voices. No real recordings are used.
