Van Morrison plays a medley of the blues classics "Baby, Please Don't Go," "Parchman Farm," and "Got My Mojo Working" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at SFJazz in San Francisco, California on September 14, 2023.
Baby, Please Don't Go is a traditional blues song that was popularized by Delta blues musician Big Joe Williams in 1935. A 19-year-old Van Morrison recorded a rock version with his band Them in 1964, based on John Lee Hooker's version, Don't Go Baby. Many artists have covered the song in many genres, including Aerosmith, AC/DC, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, Dion, Big Mama Thornton, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Charlie Musselwhite, Ted Nugent, John Cougar Mellencamp, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, Sonny Landreth, Eric Clapton, The Orioles, and Mose Allison.
Parchman Farm (a/k/a Parchman Farm Blues) was written and recorded by Delta blues musician Bukka White in 1940 and popularized by Mose Allison in 1958. The song is about the notorious Mississippi State Penitentiary where White served time. It has been covered by Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Robert Plant, Johnny Winter, Bobbie Gentry, and the Grateful Dead, among others.
Got My Mojo Working was written by Preston "Red" Foster and popularized by Muddy Waters in 1957. The song has been covered by many, including Ann Cole, Louis Jordan, Conway Twitty, Manfred Mann, The Zombies, Canned Heat, Big Mama Thornton, Koko Taylor, B.B. King, Carl Perkins, Jimmy Smith, Etta James, Edgar Winter, Ike & Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, J.J. Cale, and Eric Clapton.
Van Morrison is a singer-songwriter from Belfast, Northern Ireland who has won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (1993) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2003). Joining him onstage were Dave Keary (guitar), John Platania (guitar), John Allair (organ), Bob Ruggiero (drums), David Hayes (bass), Lucia Evans (backing vocals), Omega Rae (backing vocals), Jeff Taylor (saxophone / clarinet / flute / vocals), and Alan "Sticky" Wicket (washboard / percussion).

Van Morrison show announcement:
A six-time Grammy winner and 1993 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Van Morrison is the definition of a living musical legend – a master storyteller and a mystical, enigmatic figure steeped in spiritualism and folklore. First coming to prominence in the mid-60s as front man of the Irish R&B band Them, who scored an international hit with the anthemic single “Gloria,” Morrison’s career as a solo artist began auspiciously with the release of the smash “Brown Eyed Girl” in 1967. The song is still Morrison’s calling card and even forty years after its release remained the 4th most requested song on American radio, paving the way for the 1968 masterpiece Astral Weeks and its blockbuster 1970 follow-up Moondance. Astral Weeks and Moondance have since been ranked as #17 and #65 respectively on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and have cemented Morrison’s standing as an icon.
The ensuing years have witnessed an endlessly creative and prolific artist working at the top of his game, recording nearly 40 studio and live albums of staggering range, from his signature blue eyed “Celtic soul” and the jazz vocal songbook of Mose Allison to an embrace of country music, Delta blues with John Lee Hooker, and Irish folk in collaboration with the Chieftains. His unforgettable songs have become part of the cultural fabric, including “Domino,” “Moondance,” “Wild Night,” “Tupelo Honey,” and “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.” Morrison returns for three nights, his first since his October 2017 concerts with the late Joey DeFrancesco.
