Big Steam in the Eastern Free State - Part 1

From 14 to 20 September 2026, FarRail Tours returned to South Africa for another spectacular steam railway adventure. This time, the entire tour took place along the famous Bethlehem–Modderpoort line in the Eastern Free State - a beautifully scenic route that winds its way through spectacular gradients, sweeping valleys and dramatic sandstone mountains. The tour was hauled by Class 15F No. 3117, operated by NCCR Wonder Steam, providing plenty of opportunities to witness this magnificent locomotive at work in some of South Africa's most impressive railway scenery. Sadly, I was unable to attend the weekday activities, but I managed to make the journey down for the Saturday and early Sunday scenes. From Gumtree, No. 3117 worked her consist towards Ficksburg, tackling the gradients and putting on an impressive display of steam power along the way.
