Route 66 ran 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles through hundreds of small towns — and every one of them lived by whether the cars stopped. Then America built a bigger, faster road modeled on everything the old one had proven, and drove around it. This is the story of the most famous highway America ever built: the stubborn Tulsa businessman who drew the diagonal in 1926, the Dust Bowl families who made it the Mother Road, the neon golden age of teepee motels and roadside giants, the Interstate verdict of 1956, the town-by-town bypassing that turned off the traffic like a faucet — and the strangest ending in this catalog: the dead road that came back as a two-thousand-mile museum, now approaching its hundredth birthday.
