It took a court order to get a psychologist into her hospital room. Troopers sat outside the door, no visitors were allowed at all, and her right wrist was cuffed to the bed. Then she asked to borrow his phone.
This is Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury Mom Trial. Clancy is charged in the deaths of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, in January 2023. The defense does not contest the acts. It contests her mind, raising postpartum psychosis and a medication picture it says no one stopped, while the Commonwealth says she planned it. Day 15, before Judge William F. Sullivan in Plymouth County, is the day the defense answers with medicine.
Two cautions. A question is not evidence, the answer is the record. And every witness here was called by one side: the last one's direct never finishes, no cross happens, and nothing the defense put on has been tested yet.
WATCH WITH JUSTICE
0:00:00 - The defense opens with the mother-in-law, 38 years a labor and delivery nurse.
0:00:18 - She is the one Lindsay reached out to. Asked whether help was offered and refused, her answer is four words.
0:02:32 - On cross, the state reads her own text thread back to her. Lindsay's words, in real time, about a dependence forming in two weeks.
0:03:49 - One more message from that thread, about where she thought the depression was coming from.
0:04:18 - Cross walks her through Christmas, church and her faith, then puts a question the judge instructs the jury not to consider for any purpose.
0:05:01 - Turned away as over medicated, given crisis numbers, called twice, turned away twice. Then the state answers it: one provider never called back.
0:07:40 - The psychopharmacology expert, first. Never met her, never spoke to her, never evaluated her.
0:08:20 - The plainest fact of the day. Neither treating provider ever ordered a blood test, and nobody checked her thyroid.
0:10:33 - How much the standard American manual of psychiatry says about postpartum psychosis. The number is one.
0:11:34 - Cross. No police reports, no photographs, and a magazine article cited in his own affidavit.
0:12:38 - The sharpest hit against him. He wrote she doubled the dose and lost 48 hours of sleep. The state says seven pills were gone from a bottle of thirty.
0:14:16 - The forensic pathologist finally appears by video. The judge tells the jury it carries exactly the same weight.
0:15:58 - The fall. Thirteen feet, headfirst, onto frozen ground, and the one fracture she says only happens one way.
0:18:47 - Her heart stopped. A core temperature of 82 degrees against a normal 98.6, and why.
0:21:01 - Cross turns. No skull fracture, no brain bleed, nothing on the scans. You are not sure, are you. You are assuming.
0:21:24 - This is the moment. The state reads her own sworn testimony from an unrelated case years earlier back to her. It does not match her report here.
0:25:48 - Her answer. She says the two cases are not the same mechanism. Neither side puts it to bed, and nothing here resolves it.
0:30:26 - The psychologist on the personality test. The result is not the point. Who administered it is the point.
0:32:24 - February 2023. Her wrist cuffed to the bed, troopers outside the door, no visitors permitted at all.
0:35:06 - She borrows his phone to reach her husband, the first contact since January 24. Then he answers the question you are already forming, and volunteers something the other side will want.
0:38:33 - What disassociation means, and where it turns up in her records.
0:39:22 - What she believed about her own thoughts, and who she thought could hear them.
0:39:54 - The exchange that closes the day. Then the jury goes home, his direct unfinished.
