Who were the greatest Thomist scholastics after St. Thomas Aquinas? In this livestream, I am joined by Christian Wagner (@MilitantThomist) to rank and discuss some of the most important representatives of the Thomistic tradition, from the medieval commentators of Aquinas to the great Dominican theologians of the Second Scholastic and the later manuals. We examine the major Thomists not merely according to historical influence, but also according to philosophical depth, theological importance, fidelity to St. Thomas, originality, argumentative strength, and their contribution to the development of the Thomistic school. The authors discussed include: Hervaeus Natalis John Capreolus Dominic of Flanders Cardinal Cajetan Sylvester of Ferrara Chrysostom Javelli Francisco de Vitoria Domingo de Soto Melchor Cano Bartolomé de Medina Domingo Báñez Thomas de Lemos Diego Álvarez Francisco de Araújo John of St. Thomas Jean-Baptiste Gonet Antoine Goudin Vincent Contenson The Salmanticenses The Complutenses Cardinal Gotti Charles René Billuart Pedro de Godoy Throughout the stream, we discuss the development of Thomism across several centuries and the major controversies that divided Thomists both from rival schools and among themselves. Topics include: Essence and existence Act and potency Participation and esse The analogy of being Individuation Matter and form Subsistence and personality The nature of accidents Divine simplicity The divine attributes The Trinity and relations of origin The Filioque Divine knowledge Predestination and reprobation Grace and free will Physical premotion The De Auxiliis controversy Sufficient and efficacious grace Antecedent and consequent will Original justice and original sin Moral theology Probabilism and probabiliorism Natural law Sacramental theology Christology The Eucharist Thomist disputes with Scotists, Jesuits, Suarezians, and Molinists We also discuss the different periods of the Thomistic school: the early commentators, the rise of Cajetanic Thomism, the Salamanca tradition, the great De Auxiliis theologians, the seventeenth-century Dominican synthesis, and the later scholastic manuals. Particular attention is given to figures such as John Capreolus, often called the Prince of the Thomists; Cajetan, one of the most influential interpreters of Aquinas; Sylvester of Ferrara, the great commentator on the Summa contra Gentiles; Domingo Báñez and the controversy over grace and predestination; John of St. Thomas and his systematic synthesis of Thomistic philosophy and theology; the Salmanticenses and their monumental Cursus Theologicus; and later authors such as Gonet, Contenson, Gotti, Billuart, and Godoy. We also ask some more controversial questions: Who understood Aquinas best? Who was the most philosophically original Thomist? Who gave the strongest account of grace? Which commentators departed from St. Thomas? Which later Thomists are underrated today? And who deserves to be considered among the greatest scholastics of the entire Catholic tradition? Expect obscure Dominican disputes, disagreements over the interpretation of Aquinas, arguments about De Auxiliis, excessive discussion of distinctions, and rankings that will probably offend at least one school of Thomists. Topics include Thomism, Thomas Aquinas, Scholasticism, Catholic Theology, Medieval Philosophy, Second Scholasticism, Cajetan, Capreolus, Báñez, John of St. Thomas, Salmanticenses, Billuart, Gonet, Domingo de Soto, Melchor Cano, De Auxiliis, Grace and Free Will, Predestination, Metaphysics, Dominican Theology, and Scholastic Philosophy. 🎙️ New to streaming or looking to level up?
