Ranking the Best Jesuit Scholastics (w/ Astro)

Astro's Twitter: https://x.com/@ViaEximii Who were the greatest Jesuit scholastic theologians and philosophers? In this livestream, I am joined by my friend Astro to rank some of the most important thinkers of the Society of Jesus and discuss their contributions to Catholic scholasticism. From Francisco Suárez and Gabriel Vázquez to Luis de Molina, Robert Bellarmine, Francisco de Lugo, Rodrigo de Arriaga, Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza, Leonardus Lessius, Gregory of Valencia, and many others, we compare the major Jesuit scholastics. Topics include: Francisco Suárez and Suárezian metaphysics Gabriel Vázquez and his criticisms of Suárez and the Thomists Luis de Molina and the De Auxiliis controversy Scientia media and divine foreknowledge Grace, free will, predestination, and divine providence The real distinction between essence and existence Modes and modal distinctions Subsistence and personality Objective and formal concepts The nature of being and the object of metaphysics Moral theology and probabilism Natural law Grace and justification Trinitarian theology Christology Sacramental theology Jesuit disputes with Thomism and Scotism The development of post-Tridentine scholasticism We also discuss which Jesuits were genuinely original philosophers, which were primarily great theologians, which authors are underrated today, and which scholastics deserve to be read alongside the more famous figures of the Second Scholastic.
