Leave fruit in the sun and wild yeast turns its sugar into alcohol. No one invented it. Nine thousand years ago villagers in China were already brewing, and the oldest writing in the world records beer rations, beer goddesses and tavern laws. So who discovered alcohol, and did a drink help build the first civilizations?
The "drunken monkey" idea and a 10-million-year-old gene, the residues of Jiahu, the first wines of Georgia and Armenia, the debate over Göbekli Tepe, beer wages in Uruk, the Hymn to Ninkasi, Hammurabi's tavern laws, the brewers of Giza, Greek and Roman wine, the alchemists' stills, London's gin craze, Turkey's 1920 ban and American Prohibition.

WHAT IS NOT CERTAIN
The "drunken monkey" idea is a hypothesis. Whether Göbekli Tepe's stone basins held fermented drinks is debated, and so is whether grain was first grown for beer. The Giza workers' beer ration is an estimate. This film is history, not health advice.
