Gulliver's Travels, first published in London in October 1726, three centuries ago, looks like a children's adventure. It was a disguised attack on British politics by Jonathan Swift, Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. This is how the manuscript reached a London bookseller under a false name, how a nervous publisher toned it down, how readers decoded its tiny politicians and egg wars, and why its satire still works.
