Faith Hedgepeth's niece is the first witness the State calls in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial. She grew up beside Faith, and she got one of her last texts.
Alexis Evans grew up in the same small North Carolina neighborhood as Faith Hedgepeth. Faith was her aunt, and Alexis tells the jury she was more than that: "she was my aunt, but she was also my best friend and my sister." Faith was a student at UNC Chapel Hill who went in studying biology. "She wanted to be a pediatrician." She died in September 2012. This is State of North Carolina v. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares, tried in Durham County Superior Court, and this is Day 1, 2026-10-07. He is presumed innocent of the charges. I am showing you her whole time on the stand, from the moment the State calls her to the moment the judge releases her, with nothing trimmed out of the questioning.
Watch what the State asks for. It opens its case with the person before it opens with the evidence: who Faith was at home, at school and at church, and how protective she was of the people she loved. Then it moves to the last week as her family lived it. There is a surprise visit home on a Sunday. There is a late text, between 11 and midnight, where Faith asks whether Alexis is registered to vote. There is a Friday when two visitors come to the door. Near the end the prosecutor asks one short question about a name: "Did Faith ever say anything to you about a Miguel?" Listen to her answer. Then watch what the defense does when the judge offers cross-examination, because the choice a defense lawyer makes with a grieving family member in front of a jury tells you something about how that side plans to try this case.
Here is what I am watching as a watchdog. A witness like this one does not prove the charges by herself. She tells the jury who was lost, and that matters. The burden still sits with the State to connect that loss to the man on trial, with evidence, beyond a reasonable doubt. So ask yourself what this testimony gives the jurors that they can use in the jury room, and what it leaves for the witnesses who follow. Notice how the photo comes in, too. State's Exhibit 1 is admitted for illustrative purposes, and the judge tells the jurors to examine it "carefully, individually, and without comment." I think that is the process working the way it should, and I want you to see what it looks like when it does. At the end I put this witness on the scale and tell you where I think she lands and why. That is my read. We are not the jury, and only the jurors decide.
