The palm print on the blue wine bottle gets a name in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial. The crime lab's examiner says it is the defendant's left palm. Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old UNC student, was found in her Chapel Hill apartment in September 2012. Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares is presumed innocent of the charges in Durham County. Summer Maffett, the State Crime Lab examiner who worked the prints, is back on the stand for the State. Watch what each print gives her, then watch the defense fight the palm comparison exhibit, with the jury out. Weigh this. She says both fingerprints needed major case impressions. Were they ever taken? The palm print could not be compared to Faith: no palm prints of hers were submitted. The lab manager's approval on Exhibit 108 did not verify this work, the examiner says, and the judge let the exhibit in. No cross yet. --- WATCH WITH JUSTICE 0:00:00 What this video is, and a preview 0:00:16 Video starts 0:01:39 to 0:02:56 - Two more prints of value turn up on the blue bottle 0:02:56 to 0:04:05 - Three prints in all: one palm, two fingers 0:04:05 to 0:08:28 - The State hands up photos of all three 0:08:28 to 0:09:50 - The first fingerprint, on the screen 0:09:50 to 0:10:56 - The second fingerprint, run through the state database 0:10:56 to 0:11:58 - First round: the roommate's and Faith's known prints 0:11:58 to 0:13:13 - No palm prints of Faith's to compare; the roommate is excluded 0:13:13 to 0:14:51 - Against Faith: "Her known impressions were not good enough" 0:14:51 to 0:15:25 - The roommate is excluded on all three prints 0:15:25 to 0:21:13 - Her first lab report, State's Exhibit 106 0:21:13 to 0:25:18 - Years later, the defendant's known prints arrive 0:25:18 to 0:26:42 - Both fingerprints inconclusive against the defendant 0:26:42 to 0:28:41 - The palm print: "identified as the left palm of" the defendant, she says 0:28:41 to 0:31:18 - The defendant's known prints, State's Exhibit 96 0:31:18 to 0:32:39 - "My date does not match": an amended report 0:32:39 to 0:34:19 - Exhibit 108: both palm prints side by side, with her dots 0:34:19 to 0:35:21 - The defense objects and the jury is sent out 0:35:21 to 0:36:36 - Mr. Murphy asks to redact a lab manager's approval 0:36:36 to 0:39:10 - She says it approves a blank worksheet, not her work 0:39:10 to 0:40:55 - Hearsay, "unduly prejudicial and misleading," says the defense 0:40:55 to 0:42:44 - The judge overrules the objection, jury still out 0:42:44 to 0:48:49 - Jury back: the objection renewed, Exhibit 108 admitted 0:48:49 to 0:50:47 - Zoomed in: each red dot is a ridge event 0:50:47 to 0:52:39 - Jury out, the judge on pattern instructions: "we're not in charge conference" --- COMPLETE CASE COVERAGE justiceisaprocess.com SUBSCRIBE for daily trial coverage and hit the notification bell so you never miss testimony.
