The Mississippi River has another route to the Gulf of Mexico. So why does America work so hard to keep its main flow on the current path?
In Louisiana, the Atchafalaya offers a shorter, steeper route to the coast. At Old River Control, an engineering complex helps keep the Mississippi from shifting its main flow into that channel. Behind that effort lies a story of river commerce, New Orleans, freshwater supplies, and a coastline that keeps changing.
Using satellite imagery, historical photographs, and animated maps, we explore how rivers change course, how Old River Control works, and why the flood of 1973 became such a serious test. We also look at the tradeoffs: protecting the river corridor people depend on while sediment helps build new land elsewhere.
