3000-year-old "天" (tiān) was not the sky at all ‼️
Who else gets it… I've written "天" for so many years, and only today do I know its true face 😳
🧍 3000 years ago, what the ancients drew as "天" was not the sky at all, but a person: arms spread open, legs apart, standing facing forward.
👀 Here's the key point: this person's head was drawn especially large! In oracle bone script, the head was sometimes carved as a square block, and sometimes just as a single horizontal stroke.
📖 Shuowen Jiezi* says: 天,颠也 ("tiān" means the top of the head). "颠" means the crown of the head, so "天" originally referred to a person's headtop, and only later came to mean the high sky above our heads ☁️
✍️ 3000 years of evolution:
Oracle bone script: a big-headed little person
Bronze script: the head becomes a solid dot
Small seal script: the dot becomes a horizontal stroke
Clerical script: the arms and legs are straightened and flattened
Regular script: two horizontal strokes plus a left-falling and right-falling stroke — that's today's "天"
💡 Bonus: 3 more characters:
"大" is a standing person
Add a hairpin → "夫"
Standing on the ground → "立"
Next time you write "天", don't forget: that first horizontal stroke was originally a person's head 🤯
