Canada sits 3,500 miles from Brussels. In September 2026, Europe invited it in anyway: the EU offered Canada something no country has ever had, "associate membership". Canada said yes. Washington called it laughable, then a possible hostile act.
But the EU's own treaty says only European states can join. Morocco, nine miles from Spain, was rejected in 1987. Turkey has waited since the same year. So can Canada actually join the EU, and if it can't, what is Europe offering?
We follow 50 years of Canada trying to need America less, from the 1972 "Third Option" to the 2026 trade-talk collapse; the club rules of Article 49; a Newfoundland town where you can ferry over and pay in euros; the Whisky War over Hans Island, where Canada and Denmark share a land border; and the back door Europe is building for Canada.
