Summary: The Ice Dance competition at the 2006–07 Grand Prix Final in St. Petersburg concluded with a closely fought free dance featuring six of the world’s leading teams. Russian television commentary is provided by Vasily Solovyov and legendary coach Tatiana Tarasova, whose detailed observations focus on the choreography, technical difficulty and contrasting styles of the finalists. World champions Albena Denkova / Maxim Staviski (Албена Денкова / Максим Стависки) of Bulgaria delivered the decisive performance with their dramatic Seven Deadly Sins free dance. Tarasova is particularly impressed by the program’s construction and its integration of difficult elements into the choreography, describing it as compelling and at times almost frightening to watch. Their 101.12 points won the free dance and lifted them to the Grand Prix Final title with 161.24 overall. Marie-France Dubreuil / Patrice Lauzon of Canada brought a completely different atmosphere with their romantic At Last program. Tarasova becomes so absorbed in their skating that she admits she has almost forgotten she is supposed to be commentating. A mistake by Dubreuil in the twizzles and a deduction for an extended final lift cost valuable points, however. They finished third in the free dance with 95.90 but retained the silver medal overall by just 0.20 points. Oksana Domnina / Maxim Shabalin (Оксана Домнина / Максим Шабалин) thrilled the home audience with their powerful Polovtsian Dances. Tarasova praises how dramatically the pair had developed over the previous year, highlighting their musicality, increasingly assured presentation and the difficulty of their lifts. Their 96.17 was the second-highest free-dance score and brought them the bronze medal with 156.14 overall. Isabelle Delobel / Olivier Schoenfelder of France presented their inventive The Untouchables program, packed with unusual transitions and spectacular lifts. Tarasova admires the originality of their step sequences but identifies costly errors in the twizzles and spin. They remained fourth overall, ahead of Jana Khokhlova / Sergei Novitski (Яна Хохлова / Сергей Новицкий), whose distinctive Aranjuez Mon Amour continued to demonstrate the Russian pair’s increasingly individual style, and Melissa Gregory / Denis Petukhov, who completed the six-team field. The competition coverage also includes interviews with Domnina and Shabalin, who discuss the nerves surrounding their earlier fall at the Cup of Russia, their psychological preparation for the Final and the work still ahead before the Russian, European and World Championships. The event concludes with the medal ceremony and Bulgarian national anthem as Denkova/Staviski take gold, Dubreuil/Lauzon silver and Domnina/Shabalin bronze. Bonus footage at the end features an extended interview with coaches Natalia Linichuk (Наталья Линичук) and Gennadi Karponosov (Геннадий Карпоносов). They discuss Denkova/Staviski and Gregory/Petukhov, their approach to coaching and the changing character of ice dance under the new judging system. Particularly interesting are their reflections on the pursuit of technical levels and difficult elements, and the importance of ensuring that ice dance remains, fundamentally, dance.
