An original fictional story. People, creatures and places are invented; visuals and voices are AI-generated.
The high valleys of Central Asia, winter 1891. On a starry night, a giant egg tumbles down the mountain from the nest at the top of the old poplar Bayterek. Arman, a poor shepherd the whole village calls "the egg thief's son", finds it in the snow, still as warm as a coal.
The chick that hatches beside his stove is Tumar, the young of Samruk, a bird four times as tall as a man. Its mother cannot carry it home: by the shortest day of winter, Tumar must learn to fly up to the nest by itself. Until then she comes only at dawn, to a flat stone above a sea of clouds. And Arman must keep the old keeper's oath: raise it until it flies, never keep it, never sell anything of it.
But every feather Tumar sheds stays gold, and one feather is worth a horse. Kuat, Arman's rich uncle, wants the bird alive. Through a summer pasture, a golden trail of feathers and the longest night of the year, Arman, his silent father Erbol and Kuat's daughter Dana find out what a thirty-year-old family secret has cost them, and that a name is not worth the sky.
Inspired by the Kazakh legend of Samruk, the giant bird said to lay one golden egg at the top of the poplar Bayterek.
