Berat, Albania: Town of White Stone and Burek

This time EAST OF THE WEST lands in gorgeous Berat, Albania, aka The White City, aka The City of a Thousand Windows... But with a population of a little over 60,000 Berat isn't really a city at all. More of a large town. Well, we roamed up and down the cobblestone streets of this UNESCO Heritage Site, admired the scenery—Berat is an exceedingly attractive place—visited the caste on top of the hill, drank a couple of good wines, and, last but not least, we learned the complex and subtle art of making burek (or byrek in Albanian), the regional flaky pastry, from the lady who operated our guesthouse.
