November 11, 1918. The armistice is signed. At eleven o'clock the guns of the Western Front will fall silent, and every man in your squad knows it. All you have to do is lie still in the wet grass for two more minutes. Instead, you stand up. You run through the fog, straight at two German machine guns, while the Germans wave at you to go back. This is the story of Henry Gunther: the bank clerk from Baltimore with a German name, who lost his stripes over one honest letter home, fought through the Meuse-Argonne as a private, and at 10:59 became the last soldier killed in action in the First World War. This is a dramatised retelling based on the historical record. The main events, dates and numbers are real; some scenes, thoughts and dialogue are imagined. Would you have stayed down, or would you have gotten up and run? Tell me in the comments. #WW1 #HenryGunther #History
