December 7, 1941. You're a 19-year-old Army private on a lonely hill at the northern tip of Oahu, sitting in a truck in front of a brand-new secret machine called radar. Your shift is over. Then the line on your screen jumps higher than you have ever seen it: something huge, 137 miles out, coming straight at the island.
You call it in. The officer on the other end of the line listens, and says five words: "Well, don't worry about it."
Fifty-three minutes later, the first bombs fall on Pearl Harbor.
This is the story of the boy who saw the attack coming, the phone call that could have changed the morning, and everything that went wrong after it. Would you have hung up the phone, or gone over his head?
Tell me in the comments what you would have done.
This is a dramatisation based on the historical record. Pvt. Joseph Lockard and the people around him were real; the events, times and numbers follow the record, while some thoughts, scenes and dialogue are imagined.
