Britain has approved Jackdaw, a gas field 150 miles off Aberdeen, and a second-hand floating platform is already contracted for Rosebank, its far bigger oil neighbour west of Shetland. The number that shows the size of the bet comes at the end. Jackdaw received the green light on 21 October, after a Supreme Court ruling in June 2024 (the Finch case) forced new fossil fuel projects to count the emissions from burning their oil and gas. At its peak, the field was projected to supply about 6.5% of the gas Britain is predicted to produce, enough to heat more than 1.4 million homes. The approval comes with the Energy Wealth Fund, which starts with £2 billion of initial capital and is fed by future Jackdaw revenues. Rosebank is still waiting for its final yes. Its first phase aims at about 245 million barrels, and the field is forecast to produce around 69,000 barrels a day at its busiest, roughly a tenth of the oil the British continental shelf is projected to deliver. The vessel chosen, the Petrojarl Knarr, was built by Samsung Heavy Industries in 2014 and worked off Norway until May 2022. Altera Infrastructure has a firm nine-year contract for it, with options that could stretch to 25 years. The video explains how a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) works, who owns the fields (Adura, the Shell and Equinor joint venture), where the process could still stumble, and what the numbers do and do not say about Europe. If you want the paperwork behind the headlines explained plainly, subscribe to Britain Vision. Then tell me in the comments: now that the burning has to be counted, would you approve Rosebank? #Rosebank #Jackdaw #NorthSeaOil #BritishEnergy #OilAndGas #EnergyPolicy #FPSO
