Everybody blames the Cessna 150. The federal government's own numbers say the opposite. In NTSB Safety Recommendation A-97-41 through A-97-45, the board measured the fatal stall and spin rate of every major American trainer across the decade from 1985 to 1994. The Cessna 150 and 152 came in at 0.098 to 0.134 per 100,000 flight hours, the lowest figure on the board. The Piper Tomahawk came in at 0.336 to 0.751, and across the type's history the NTSB counted 51 stall accidents and 49 dead.
This countdown works through ten primary trainers and the specific mechanism inside each one. The Beechcraft Sport, whose gross weight the FAA cut by 250 pounds because it could not meet certification climb minimums. The Grumman AA-1 Yankee, whose short bonded wing breaks instead of buffeting. The Beechcraft Skipper, which beat the Tomahawk two to one on stall and spin rate and sold 312 units. The Ercoupe, certified in 1940 as characteristically incapable of spinning by limiting elevator travel, and left with a sink rate the pilot cannot arrest.
Then it gets structural. The Cirrus SR20 was exempted from the standard one-turn spin recovery demonstration, making the certified recovery a ballistic parachute rather than a control input. The Beechcraft T-34 Mentor, stressed to plus six and minus three G, was sold into civilian air combat simulation and lost three wings and six lives. And the Piper Cherokee carries an FAA formula counting a training hour as seventeen times more damaging to the wing spar than a private-use hour, in a rule that arrived in 2021 — thirty-four years after the agency issued and then cancelled an inspection directive for the same failure.
