"What does being a good ancestor in training look like when you aren't married and you aren't a biological mother?" For me, Barbados just kept pulling. The Caribbean just kept tugging at me. And I had to decide whether I was going to answer. What's yours was never lost. But nobody told us that growing up. In this video I'm getting personal—sharing stories from my childhood as a first-generation Caribbean-American eldest daughter, and the questions that followed me into womanhood: Who am I in this body? Who am I between these two worlds? What was taken, and what was always mine to begin with? Being a DAWTA of the Diaspora isn't just a title. It's a reclamation. Of land. Of pleasure. Of the cultural inheritance that colonization tried to convince us was gone. It wasn't gone. It was waiting. And in two weeks, I'm dropping a full video on dual citizenship and the repatriation process, because coming home shouldn't be this hard to figure out.
