Episode #3 of The Intentional CEO is out today!
When David Payne told me he and his team were going to build a Clear Leader Pocketbook for Chevron Wells, I didn’t think first about what should go in it. I thought about who would be reading it.
So I sent him straight to the original Starbucks Little Green Apron Book.
Not for the coffee. Whoever designed that little book understood something most corporate handbooks miss completely: people don’t read the same page the same way.
One reader wants the point, fast.
Another wants the reasoning behind it.
Another wants to know how it affects the people around them.
Another wants to know what’s expected, and what stays the same.
Same page, four different lenses, and it worked for all of them.
Most leadership guides are written by one personality for one personality, usually the author’s. Then everyone wonders why they end up in a drawer.
Dave and his team took that seriously, and this one didn’t end up in a drawer. All these years later, Clear Leader has found its second wind. It’s now an integral part of how the Wells organisation is driving towards functional excellence.
In this episode we talk about what it looked like on the ground, what it changed, and why it’s still standing.
Thanks to Christine Beiriger, who wanted “inspiration, not just comforting.”
Tuesday. Worth your time.
