We start up in Tacony, a quiet corner of Northeast Philadelphia, roll fast down I 95 South past the South Philly sports complexes, and end up dilly dallying a little in Eddystone, deep in Delaware County. What ties the two ends together is history most people drive right past. Tacony was built up in the 1870s by Henry Disston, whose Keystone Saw Works became the largest saw manufacturer in the world. Disston did not just build a factory here, he built a whole planned community around it for his workers, with housing, churches, and parks laid out block by block. Ride the length of I 95 and you land in Eddystone, which has almost the same story told in a different industry. This little riverfront borough was home to the Baldwin Locomotive Works, once the largest steam locomotive manufacturer on earth, turning out tens of thousands of engines and, during the world wars, rifles and artillery shells that shipped out to soldiers overseas. Two company towns, one built on saws and one built on locomotives, bookending a highway that now flies past ballparks and arenas where the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and Sixers play.
