Why Do You Look Like Your Parents? The Science of Genetics Have people ever told you, “You have your mother’s eyes” or “You smile like your father”? This happens because of genetics. Genetics is the study of how traits are passed from parents to children. Our DNA contains the information that helps our bodies grow, develop, and function. The main parts of genetics are DNA, genes, and chromosomes. DNA is like an instruction manual for the body and is found in almost every cell. Genes are small sections of DNA that influence traits such as eye colour, hair type, skin tone, and height. Chromosomes are structures that organise and carry DNA. Humans normally have 23 pairs of chromosomes, with one chromosome in each pair coming from the mother and the other from the father. When a baby is formed, genetic information from both parents combines to create a unique combination of genes. This is why brothers and sisters can look different even though they have the same parents. Some traits can also be passed through generations, which is why you may share certain features with a grandparent. Sometimes, changes in DNA or chromosomes can cause genetic conditions. Some are inherited from parents, while others result from new genetic changes. Conditions such as Down syndrome and haemophilia can have genetic causes. Other conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, may involve both genes and lifestyle or environmental factors. Although you cannot change the DNA you inherit, healthy habits can support your overall health. Eating healthy food, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, avoiding smoking and harmful substances, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals, and knowing your family health history can all be helpful. In short, genetics explains how traits are passed from parents to children. DNA carries genetic information, genes contain specific instructions, and chromosomes organise and carry DNA. Together, they help shape how we look, grow, and function, making each person unique. #SignsofHealth #Genetics #DNA #Genes #Chromosomes #Heredity #HumanBody #ScienceExplained #HealthAwareness #GeneticHealth #ISHNews #ISL #IndianSignLanguage #SignLanguage ISH News broadcasts the Daily News and Entertainment online in Deaf-friendly accessible formats which are in Indian Sign Language (ISL), visual images with titles, voice-over and closed-captions.
